Hardcore punk series: part 7

My best advice for all of you is to not have one of these guys’ CD cases lying around if you get pulled over.

MDC

Part 6: Suicidal Tendencies
Part 5: Cro-Mags
Part 4: New Breed Tape Compilation
Part 3: Bad Brains
Part 2: Black Flag
Part 1: Minor Threat

MDC are a hardcore punk band from Austin, Texas (holla, reliant6). You may be wondering what MDC actually stands for. Well, it depends. On almost every album they changed it. On their first album, Millions of Dead Cops, their name was- you guessed it- Millions of Dead Cops. Later names included Millions of Dead Christians (my personal favorite) and Multi-Death Corporation, and most recently (2004, to be exact), Magnus Dominus Corpus.

I’ll talk about their debut because it’s always the “classic” for a hardcore band, as you guys have hopefully figured it out already. In fact, I’ll talk about the 2001 reissue which combined the LP More Dead Cops. Like Suicidal Tendencies, they’ve got a sense of humor. Like Bad Brains, they’re homophobes. Did I tell about the time… No, no I didn’t. Bad Brains’s H.R. and MDC’s Dave Dictor were on tour in Austin with a local band, Big Boys. H.R. and Dave found out that Big Boys’s Randy Turner was gay. H.R. and Dave argued, and as a result Bad Brains left the tour. But before leaving he left a note to Turner, saying, “burn in hell bloodclot faggot.” MDC wrote a song about it called “Pay to Come Along” which was featured on the More Dead Cops LP.

At that time, MDC was known for their song “John Wayne Was A Nazi.” Other controversial songs were “I Remember,” about cops, and “America’s So Straight,” about you know what. All of their songs probably attracted controversy, though. As for the music, you’ve got your straight-forward hardcore punk. Most songs were under 2 minutes. Like many other punk bands of their time, they gave Reagan hell.

They released a couple more EPs- Multi-Death Corporations and Millions of Dead Children- which led up to the release of their second album, Smoke Signals. Smoke Signals wasn’t entirely a hardcore album; it featured more traditional punk and rock songs (I’m not shitting you guys; listen to “South Africa is Free” and “Country Squawk,” just to name a couple). They returned to hardcore on album #3 This Blood’s For You, and followed up swiftly with a live album. Album #6 Shades of Brown featured hip-hop and was followed by a tour of Russia (this was in ‘93). MDC were the first punk band to tour Russia. They fell apart a couple of years later, but returned, new lineup in tow, in 2000, followed by Magnus Dominus Corpus in 2004.

P.S. MDC were never crossover nor metal, as far as I know, so this doesn’t have anything to really do with them, however I’ve mentioned crossover before, so check this article out about the worst hardcore-turned-metal bands. You’re welcome, Metal Inquisition.
